I opened my first Scookiepad and immediately flipped it over looking for the serial label. (You’ll do the same.)
Here’s what should be in the box: the Scookiepad unit, a USB-C charging cable, and a quick-start card.
That’s it. No wall adapter. No stand.
No extra ports. If your box is missing the cable or card, contact support. Don’t assume it’s “supposed to be that way.”
Flip the unit over. Look for the engraved serial label near the bottom edge.
If it starts with “SC-V2”. You’ve got v2.x. If it starts with “SC-V3”.
You’re on v3.x. The RGB behavior changes between them. Don’t guess.
Charge it first. Minimum two full hours. Even if the LED glows faintly, plug it in and wait.
Skipping this causes boot failures (I’ve) seen it three times this month.
To enter setup mode: hold Power + Reset for five seconds. Watch for the blue-green pulse. Too short?
Nothing happens. Too long? It reboots.
Timing matters.
Use only a 5V/2A (or higher) charger. Third-party power banks? Not during setup.

Simcookie Connect: Pairing That Actually Works
I’ve watched people rage-quit this process. Twice.
The app is Simcookie Connect. Not “Simcookie” or “SC App” (that’s) what the store listings say. Get it right.
iOS 15.4+ only. Android 10+. No exceptions.
If your phone can’t run Spotify, it won’t run this.

Open the app. Tap Add New Device. (Yes.
That tiny button in the top-right corner. Not the big one at the bottom.)
Let Location Services. Yes, really. iOS forces it for BLE scanning. Android just needs Bluetooth on (but) location helps.
Grant Bluetooth permissions. Don’t skip this. The app will ask.
Say yes.
Scan. Look for ‘SCPD-XXXX’. Not ‘Simcookie’, not ‘SCPAD’.
Four letters, four numbers.
Tap it. Do not tap “Pair”. Tap “Connect”.
Big difference.
90% of “pairing failed” errors? iOS background restrictions. Low Power Mode kills it. Close Slack.
Close Chrome. Toggle Bluetooth off/on.
And keep the app open. Foregrounded. No auto-lock.
Set timeout to ≥2 minutes.
You’ll see a “Firmware Update Required” banner if needed. Or “Ready to Configure” when it sticks.

First-Time Scookiepad Setup: No Guesswork
I open any browser after connecting the app. It redirects me to http://scookiepad.local. No typing.
No hunting. Just go.
SSID is case-sensitive. I type it exactly as my router shows it. Capitals and all.
One wrong letter and it fails. (Yes, I’ve done it.)
WPA2 or WPA3 password goes next. Timezone? Dropdown only.
No manual offsets. No math. Just pick your city.

Admin password must be 8+ characters. Alphanumeric plus one symbol. If it’s weak, a warning pops up.
And it won’t let me save. That’s built-in brute-force protection. Not optional.
Not negotiable.
Then comes the 12-word recovery phrase. I generate it. I write it down.
I store it offline. The portal won’t let me exit without doing this first.
DNS defaults to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). I can change it (but) if I’m on an enterprise network, I’ll need a static IP reservation in my router’s DHCP table. Otherwise, it drops.

Does It Actually Work? Let’s Check.
You plug it in. You open the app. Now what?
Success looks like this: solid white LED, “Online” in the dashboard, and a clean blink when you send blink LED 3x from the Commands tab.
If it says “Connected but Offline”, your router is blocking it. UDP port 5683. That’s CoAP.
Gets blocked by default on some firmware. (Yes, even your fancy mesh system.)
Check your firewall rules. Then verify mDNS is enabled. If it’s off, your Scookiepad can’t be found on the network.
Period.
App drops after 10 seconds? Don’t panic. Uninstall Simcookie Connect.
Clear its cache. Reinstall. Log back in using your recovery phrase (not) the QR code again.
And whatever you do, don’t reset the device.
Intermittent sync? Measure distance. Is the Scookiepad within 10 meters of the router?
Is it sitting next to a microwave or cordless phone? Those scream over 2.4GHz. Move it.
Factory reset is last resort. Pinhole for 12 seconds. But before that, export the diagnostic log.
Support needs that file. Not your guesses.

Older firmware? Don’t run HomeKit and MQTT at the same time. It chokes.
Watchdog resets. You’ll reboot more than your router in 2017.
